Stream...

Stream of consciousness... Just some random thoughts on junk going through my mind. No rhyme or reason or order or anything. If ya don't like it click that little X in the top right hand corner!

  • Had lunch with Brandy yesterday... it was so good to see her again! I sure miss our regular lunch hours!
  • I got 100% on my first Physiology quiz today, and that made me smile. Made me smile even bigger knowing that not very many people did get 100%.
  • Got my "critical thinking" CAP test results back today ... It's a test of your logic that we had to take at the end of last semester. I don't understand the scores, but I know I "passed" all sections (it's not worth anything, so that's why I put passed in quotes)... and I'm above the national average in all sections too. (Even though it's not worth anything, it's nice to know I can still do ok. Go me!)
  • C=RN ... A & B is just gravy. ...hopefully i'll get a good bit of gravy this summer though!
  • Been listening to the all DMB station on AOL radio for the last couple days... a LOT.
  • Made kickass fajitas with portabella mushrooms, sauteed onions, jack cheese & avocado for dinner tonight. Even packed a leftover one for lunchbreak during clinical tomorrow.
  • I'm actually going to watch a baby being born tomorrow... at least I think so. I still don't know anything about Pitocin or Toridol or any of the other drugs yet, though.
  • (guess you can say I'm procrastinating again?) ~~ Pretty much any time you see a post you can bet I'm putting off something else I'd rather not do!
  • All in all, it's been a pretty good week - and I'm not even sure what's made it different from the last couple weeks.
  • Read a spanglish blog on Monday and understood it. Spanglish is always easier than full Spanish, but still .. baby steps though, grasshopper.
  • There's always a couple things that I want to write, but don't because I know people that read this.

Old?

I found not one, but TWO gray eyebrow hairs last week.
A gray eyebrow hair is far worse than a gray hair on the head.
I think that officially starts me on the road to being old?

Dogma

Just thinking about popping this in while I'm ironing my scrubs...
and thought I'd give a shout out to one of my favorite movies.
It may be old now, but it's still great!

.. and Kevin Smith gets extra points for
mentioning John Hughes! *grin*

(fck maternity!)

It's 4am, and I've got clinical at 6:45am. (Well, she said we can get there at 7am, but geez, at that hour what's 15 minutes!? Please tell me!?) Didn't sleep a wink... Instead, I spent the night reading MATERNITY. Seriously.. this is getting kinda old. I spent allllll day Monday reading Maternity and taking notes. Now, I know I am a good student, and a pretty smart cookie if I don't say so myself.. and I really did apply myself and still spent over EIGHT HOURS going through one of the chapters. All about the changes that occur during pregnancy. There is really just a lot of information. And yet I bombed the quiz. I got all confused with presumptive, probable & positive signs of pregnancy. (eyeroll) Ask me about Chadwick's sign or changes with hypotension, fine... but presumptive/probable/positive signs? I'm lost. And I still don't quite understand it. I think it was really in the wording of the quiz. And a bunch of people got confused by the funky wording! (Somehow it makes me feel good I'm not the only one, at least!) ... it's worth 2% of my grade. Whatever... (Rubbing Earlobes: Woooo-Sahhhh!!!)

So, I've got some new words I learned today:

    *Diaphoresis: Sweating
*Puerperium: (aka 4th trimester of pregnancy) It is the 6wk period between birth & return of reproductive organs to normal nonpregnant state
    *Afebrile: Having no fever
*Ascites: Fluid that has accumulated within the peritoneal cavity

And I encountered one of my favorite words just the other day on an online module for work: Nosocomial Infections... (long story) All I can say is Hepatitis!!! (you had to be there!)

Talked to Brandy today for a really long time. Gawd I miss that girl! ((*hugs to you*)) I know, I totally suck for turning off the phone and slipping into my own world, but dang it felt good for a while! Anyway I thought to add her here because she learned a new word today too! :) (hehe) She learned "BLOG" .. when I told her that I got a blog, she told me she thought it was some kind of big flat slimy frog. Haa!!! Ok, I just laughed a little too hard at her expense! But ya know, the more I think of it, it does sound kinda Boggy Froggy! My last pet frog was named "Totem". If I ever get another one, I think maybe I'll name him BLOG! :)

Things I miss

In my post from yesterday, I mentioned how I miss the SF Chronicle. It is BY FAR not the only thing I miss. #1 is definately Safeway. What I wouldn't do for some Safeways around here. Here's some other things I dearly miss... (in no particular order):

  • S&W 3 bean salads
  • real Chinese food (and Takeout Chinese delivery! OMG!)
  • I'm not even a big drinker, but I sure miss being able to buy alcohol at the grocery stores! The thought of going into an ABC Liquor store just makes me feel all "dirty" inside!!
  • Shopping on Sundays. (Blue laws suck!)
  • Multiculturism
  • Channel 2 KTVU News
  • Mother's Cookies
  • Cinco De Mayo celebrations ~ ok this may be part of multiculturism? But seriously, I said something about wanting to go out for Cinco De Mayo, and people asked me what it was. Guess I'm just thinking about this because it was just last week.
  • 7-11 Slurpees. I don't care what you say, Icees are NOT the same. And what happened to there being a convenience store and gas station on every corner? Here it's a CHURCH on every corner.
  • Fresh fruit. Yeah, they've got fruit here, but there's something different about it. It just doesn't taste the same. But then, I guess if your fruit traveled 3000 miles, it wouldn't taste quite as fresh.
  • Pink hair. ... well not necessarily, but nobody really has that here. I had magenta hair back home, and it was a non-issue. That would not go over too well here. (Though i'd kinda like to try!) I miss the fact that back home it was OK to be "different" or alternative.
  • Healthy food. It's hard to come by in ... what do they call it? The heart attack belt?

And before I get hate mail, let me just say ~ I grew up in Northern California, just north of San Francisco. I have pretty much always lived in a health-conscious, progressive, multicultural, tolerant society. I don't hate the South. If I did, I wouldn't still be here! But that doesn't mean that I don't miss aspects of home dearly.

It greatly disappoints me how prevalent the stereotypical redneck is here. Sexism, Racism, & Christianity have been thrown at me so much since I've been here, and it sickens me. I guess most of it is culture shock, but I also don't hold the same values that people here do. That's all. Not going to stay on my soapbox today.

Bustin' Mine

This is my licence plate frame.
I absolutely love it!!
It's soooo true.

Just some ramblings..

Read a book just for fun the other day, it was called Leave it to Cleavage. (The title intrigued me!) It was awful. If you truly have a day to waste your time, go for it.. but you'd find just about anything more enjoyable. Re-read Harry Potter instead... next book comes out in July! Can't wait!!

Maternity nursing started, and I think I'm officially a slave to this textbook! First day of class, and we "reviewed" our over the summer reading assignment... (first 7 chapters!) and were given a take-home test. Talk about learning new words. Maternity has a language of its own, and even though I did most of the reading, I still felt lost. Remeber my post a while back when I was talking about learning new words? Well I'm swimming in them right now. I've definately got a lot of reading to do.

Sucks because I'm not in touch with the "real world" too well anymore. It seems the days are long gone when I can follow the news & politics. (Lord knows you can't get it by reading the local "newspaper" here... I SOOO miss the San Francisco Chronicle!) I keep telling myself there'll be plenty of time to "catch up" once I graduate!

The "To Do" List

I sooo wasn't productive yesterday. And I dearly wanted to be, since I felt it was my one real vacation day for myself. (Picking up extra hours at work this week since school is out... and then school starts back up, so yeah, I don't have much time)

So I wrote myself a "to do" list of all these things that are running in my head of junk I really need to get done. And you know what of it I'd done? ... Wash the truck, wash sheets & take a shower. Yeah... I actually put shower on my list. (more on that one later!) Thats all I did yesterday.

I got started early, then I end up screwing off... and when i finally went to bed... where were the sheets? I'll tell you... they haven't moved. They're still in the washing machine. Albeit, clean. But nope.. haven't moved. I actually slept on the mattress pad (which I didn't wash this time, because I didn't want to deal with the stray feathers) and a pillow - sans case. Just took a couple blankets and curled up with them.

So about that shower... well, my intent was this (and it's in order):

  • Strip the bed & wash the sheets (check)
  • while the sheets were in the washer, go outside and wash the truck (check).
  • Once the truck was washed and dried, throw the sheets in the dryer (nope).
  • Run up to the tanning bed (2 minutes away) and get a quick tan in (sorry, cap'n didn't make it.. gonna stay pale)
  • Come home and take a quick shower (Check - HA skipped right to that one!)
  • Get dressed and go get tires rotated and balanced (I so hate going to auto shops - feel like I'm getting ready to be taken... so I kinda skipped that one)
  • After the tires are done, go up to the campus to check on my financial aid & turn in fall registration forms (umm... yeah, I know I suck... thought I could call instead, but never did)

And so on... you can see I kinda screwed yesterday up. Now tonight, I work.. so I really need to be in bed by about noon.. 1pm at the latest. And I still have all this shit that needs to get done. My maternity test is on the first day of class (5 more days) and I still have no idea what our reading assignment is. I guess I better find my phone and charge it so I can call someone to ask...

Next time I make a to-do list, here's what it's going to look like:

  • Crawl out of bed
  • Come downstairs sleepy-eyed and reach for coffee
  • Stare out the windows at the birds
  • Say something like "Lord have mercy on the working woman!"
  • Find something to nibble on - nothing big, just a little something
  • Come back upstairs, coffee in hand
  • Begin running water for a shower
  • Light a candle or two in the bathroom (so that the lights can stay off!)
  • Enjoy the hot coffee while getting pelted with hot water in the shower
  • When shower is through, slather self with lotion, and put on favorite fleece monkey robe
  • Crawl back under still-warm covers and fall asleep

Dayummm... then I could cross everything off, and feel really productive! I need to make more lists like this!
